Static and dynamic response of elastic suspended cables under diffused damage and uniform thermal load

Marco Lepidi

The paper presents a continuous monodimensional model of an elastic suspended ca- ble under uniform thermal load. The different effects caused by warming or cooling temperature changes on the cable static and dynamic response are analyzed, with focus on natural frequencies. The thermal effects are then compared with the damage effects, as described by the continuous mo- nodimensional model of a damaged cable. Qualitative differences and similarities are discussed, with the goal of characterizing the temperature signature, and therefore recognizing and eliminating thermal effects in the application of vibration-based damage identification techniques
