Dynamics of 3D non-symmetric rigid bodies resting on a horizontalsurface

A model of three-dimensional rigid body resting on a horizontal rigid surface and subject to base motion is developed to verify if there are conditions for which a three-dimensional model is needed instead of a two-dimensional one in order to have a more accurate description of motion. The modeled body has a rectangular base and it is allowed only to rock around a side or a vertex. Moreover its center of mass can be eccentric with respect to its geometrical center. The general balance principle is used to obtain the equations of motion. Results show that, with a one- sine pulse base excitation, there are directions of the horizontal excitation where only a 3D model gives the correct description of the body behavior
